QUALITATIVE RESEARCH ON POLICE STOP & SEARCH PRACTICES: ON ETHICAL CHALLENGES AND DOING SCIENCE

In this session we will present the ethical difficulties and challenges that arise when doing qualitative research on police practices of stop and search.
Based on the experience of ongoing research in the Crime & Society Research Group several ethical issues (such as obtaining access to the field, informed consent, the difficult positioning as a researcher on the field, the vulnerable but necessary rapport with participants, …) will be presented. These ethical challenges will be discussed in the light of the production of scientific insight on this sensitive societal issue.
